My name is David. I’m a funeral director. And a drug addict.I spend my days sitting in the delicate space where the living say goodbye to their dead, taking inventory of the night’s losses. Calls. Bodies. Paperwork. I thought I knew exactly how my own story would end—a slow, predictable circle down the drain. 

Then, a twenty-nine-year-old overdose victim named Terry lands in my cooler, and four of his chaotic, fiercely loyal friends walk into my lobby.

They are an odd lot of damaged outcasts: Joe, the exhausted nurse holding up the sky; Frank, the combat veteran running on paranoia and speedballs; Jerry, the mouthy former jail guard hiding behind bad jokes; and Tom, a raw nerve wrapped in old armor, silently grieving a secret love. We are none of us angels. 

We are none of us looking for a clean, easy three-act tale of redemption where everyone walks into the sunset sober and forgiven (p. 9). But as our lives collide in the humid shadows of the Florida coast, we find ourselves hurtling toward a radical reckoning.

Together, we’re about to find out if five fractured souls can become the spark that ignites a way out—or the explosion that finishes us all.
